st205Sitting in an elbow of the A61 and A38, Alfreton is just over thirteen miles North of Derby and about eleven miles West of the M1. The Abraham Lincoln Library is approached via Watchorn Lane at a set of traffic lights on Derby Road (A61) a few yard North of A38 roundabout. There is a ‘loose stone’ car park.

flying-scotsmanAlferton’s railway station sited to the north-east of the town, was closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching Axe, but on 7 May 1973 a station was reopened and is now on the Sheffield to Nottingham line, so isn’t served from Derby directly. Full timetabling, prices and tickets can be obtained from National Rail Enquiries. The station is about one and a half miles from the hall. Turning right out of the railway station up Salcombe Road leads to Mansfield Road B6019, a further right turn allows for a straight journey (straight over the mini roundabout) along High Street to the ‘central set of traffic lights’ at the A61, a further right turn into King Street, down the hill half a mile will reveal the Lincoln Library on the left, about a hundred yards prior to the large intersection with the A38.

Alfreton, residing in central East Derbyshire is about twenty six miles from East Midlands Airport, fifty four miles form both Birmingham Airport and  Manchester Airport.

Alfreton is a market town in the Derbyshire Dales, contains many historical buildings and many independent shops and is famous for its historic annual Shrovetide football match. Due to its proximity to the southern edge of the Peak District and being the closest town to the popular area of Dovedale, the town is known as both the ‘Gateway to Dovedale’ and the ‘Gateway to the Peak District’.
