The Movember Foundation is a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. Since 2003, millions have joined the men’s health movement, raising £402 million and funding over 1,000 programmes focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
The state of men’s health is in a crisis. Simply put, men are dying too young. Gender is one of the strongest and most consistent predictors of health and life expectancy. For men, this is not good news. On average, across the world, men die 6 years earlier than women. The impact of prostate and testicular cancer on lives is substantial, with prostate cancer being the second most common cancer in men worldwide and the number of cases expected to almost double to 1.7 million cases by 2030. Indeed, one in every eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives.
Every year thousands of men grow a moustache during the month of Movember, sorry – November, to support this cause. The money they raise doing so is spent by the Movember Foundation on education, advocacy and medical research.
In 2015 a group of Derbyshire Freemasons, lead by Movember veteran Bro. Pete Walklate of Hartington Lodge No. 1085, joined in the fun. “Team Derbyshire Freemasons” were:
|Bro. Pete Walklate||Hartington Lodge No. 1085|
|W Bro. Tony Harvey||Pioneer Lodge No. 9065|
|W Bro. Mick Hitchcock, ProvGChStwd||Vulcan Lodge No. 4382|
|W Bro. Edward Hodgkinson||Lodge of Fellowship No. 9123|
|W Bro. Robert Duxbury||Okeover Lodge No. 1324|
|W Bro. Ravi Kumar Sahnan||Littleover Lodge No. 9565|
|W Bro. Martyn Prior||Vulcan Lodge No. 4382|
|W Bro. Jim Snape||King Egbert Lodge No. 4288|
In total this team raised £1,555 for men’s health (see the team page on the Movember website). They wish to thank everyone who donated, encouraged, ridiculed their upper lip growth and generally supported them. Perhaps next year the team will grow as well as the upper lips. Most have now removed their moustache (mine went at 12.01 on 1st December).
